I was walking downtown this week during my lunch break in attempt to find a good location to camp out for an hour.
I wasn’t paying much attention to anything going on around me when I heard a cheerful “Hey there pretty lady!” Looking up, there was a middle-aged man on a bike who (for what ever reason) was more than happy to see me. Surprised and slightly disgusted, I muttered a quick “hi.” Avoided direct eye contact, I quickened my step but didn’t get long before hearing a loud crash. It had to be him, so I glanced back.
His bike was in a twisted mess on the ground, and he was scrambling to pick up the cigarette disposer that he had just knocked over with his two-wheeler. I continued walking and did everything I could to keep from laughing.
I told a friend or two and a co-worker of mine, but by the end of the work day I had forgotten all about it.
I got rained on when I left for work that day, a car accident delayed my journey home, the book I was reading became depressing, and I experienced my first continual knee pain during my evening jog. I took a two hour nap but was still tired, people called that I didn’t want to talk to, and the neighbor’s TV was on entirely too loud. Finally, it was time to go to bed and forget about the day.
I lay awake regretting my hefty nap earlier that evening. There I was, pondering why I didn’t feel like myself when “Hey pretty lady” man popped into my head. I laughed. Out loud. Again. The smile didn’t leave my face as I realized that this man had made my day.
Granted, this man doesn’t realize that his extreme happiness followed by a slight misfortune was the highlight of my day, but it led me to think of the little opportunities everyone has each day to put a smile on a face.
Hey There Pretty Lady Man, if you’re reading this, thanks for making my day.
Shootin’ the Wit is a weekly column about everyday life that should never, ever be taken too seriously.
I’m a writer and photographer who loves old cars, big dogs and trying stuff for the first time. I believe everyone should have a bucket list because life isn’t about working, paying bills and having the latest and greatest. It’s about experiences. Achieving goals. People. Adventures. Travel.
I’ve never dyed my hair, broken a bone, or watched a Star Wars movie, and I don’t plan on doing any of these.
Sometimes it can be the smallest thing that can make you feel better.
